From the President Hayward "Tom" Thomas... |
|||||||||||||||||||
| My e-mail this month included one from Betsy Brady, Duke Cunningham's daughter, saying that her brother was flying her mom and dad and twelve family members to Chicago to visit the Museum. (Duke flew with VC-8.) What a great trip! My U.S. mail this month brought an envelope of clippings from Vic and Mary Lentz. (Vic wa a radioman on the Guadalcanal). They also sent a wonderful photo of four generations of Lentzes standing in front of the U-505, all looking like they were having a great time. And indeed they were. Vic says that when people going through the exhibit learned that he had "been there", he became a celebrity, signing autographs and everything. He also was the subject of a feature article in the Lamesa, Texas Reporter, and a special Veterans Day honoree at the Lamesa Middle School. He's sharing his story (and yours!) with a whole new generation. |

| THink back for a minute. A person who is 80 years old today was born in 1925. That's 60 years after the end of the Civil War. Today's 16 year old was born 60 years after the capture of the U-505. When you could have, would you TG 22.3 vets have been interested in hearing from a Civil War veteran? I hope so - and maybe some of you actually did! Nothing beats hearing the story from someone who played a part, whether large or small. So keep sharing your experience; it will mean more than you may think to those that hear it and if you are speaking at a middle school, probably more than one of them will think about it at the time. And yes, to repeat myself from previous Scuttlebutts, I urge you to write it down. It will be cherished. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Keith Gill, our friend and Curator of the U-505 through the whole great process of the last dozen years, has taken a new job in the Chicago area. A promotion for him, but we shall miss him. His energy, imagination and tact were phenomenal, and the results could hardly have been more glorious. | |||||||||||||||||||
| The only part of Minneapolis I've seen is the airport. I'm looking forward to joining you all there soon! | |||||||||||||||||||
